Why a watermark ends up on your code
A mark on a QR code is advertising, and it is unusually good advertising. Your flyer goes on a counter, a window or a thousand boxes, and every person who looks at it sees whose tool made the code. That is worth more to a generator than the download costs it.
The second reason is the paywall. A mark makes the free version feel unfinished, which is what turns a free download into a subscription. We would rather trade it for an email address: an account gives you a dashboard and gives us someone to tell when something changes, and that is a fairer swap than a logo on your packaging.
Four things to check before you trust any free generator
The watermark is the visible problem. Three of these four cost you more than it does, and the expiry one can kill a printed sign months after you stopped paying attention.
- Does the mark come off, and what does it cost?
- Some generators only remove it on a paid plan. Here a free account does it, which is an email address and nothing else.
- Is the code static or dynamic?
- A static code holds the link inside the pattern and cannot be switched off. A dynamic one resolves through a server, so it depends on that account staying alive.
- Does anything expire?
- This is the real trap. A free dynamic code on a trial dies when the trial ends, and the sign is already on the wall.
- Can you get a vector file?
- PNG is fine for screens. A print shop will ask for SVG, and some free tools keep it behind the paywall.
Which kind survives without an account behind it: static vs dynamic, explained.
What a free account gets you
Unlimited static codes, PNG and SVG downloads with no mark, every code saved in one dashboard, and one dynamic code you can re-point after it is printed. Nothing expires and there is no card on file.
Every code editable, scan counts and your own short link domain are Premium, $4 a month. See what each plan includes.
Questions people ask
- Does a QR code from here have a watermark?
- Not once you have an account, and the free one counts. A download taken without signing in carries a small QRFLOW mark in the corner; a free account removes it from every PNG and SVG you download after that. No card, no trial period.
- Why do free QR code generators add a watermark at all?
- The mark is advertising. It travels on your flyer to every person who sees it, which is worth more to a generator than the download costs. The other reason is a paywall: the mark makes the free tier feel unfinished so the paid tier looks necessary.
- Is a watermark worse than a code that expires?
- Much better, and the expiry is the trap people miss. A mark is only cosmetic, while a dynamic code on a trial stops resolving when the trial ends, so a printed sign goes dead. A static code cannot expire, because the link is inside the pattern.
- Will the code keep working if I never pay?
- Yes, for a static code. The link lives in the pattern itself, so nothing has to stay online for it to scan, and there is no account to keep active. That is true here and it is true of any properly made static code anywhere.
- Can I get a code with no watermark in a vector file?
- Yes. PNG and SVG are both free and neither carries a mark once you are signed in. SVG is the one to send a print shop, because it stays sharp at any size, from a business card to a banner.
