Hold the data a product passport needs

3 minutes

There is a block set on the product page for the data an EU digital product passport carries. It is a place to put that data, on an address you own, that a scan already reaches. It is not a compliance product, and we will not tell you it is one.

What this is, and what it is not

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation covers almost every physical good sold in the EU, with three exceptions written into it: food, feed and medicinal products. For everything else it introduces a digital product passport, a data carrier holding information about the product's sustainability.

The catch is that the regulation is a framework. What a passport must contain is set category by category, in separate acts, and for most categories those are not written yet. Iron and steel, aluminium, textiles, furniture, tyres and mattresses are the groups named as priorities. Nobody can hand you a finished passport for a product in a category whose rules do not exist.

Heads up. So we make no conformity claim for QRFLOW, and you should distrust any tool that does. Conformity is assessed against rules per category. What we can do is hold the data, on your own domain, reachable from the code already on the pack.

If you sell food, feed or medicines, this does not apply to you at all. The rest of the product page still does.

The five blocks

  • Materials. What it is made of, the share of each, and how much of that is recycled.
  • Substances of concern. Named substances, the CAS number, where in the product they are, and how much.
  • Durability and repair. Expected lifetime, whether spare parts are available and for how long, what can be upgraded, and a link to the instructions.
  • Footprint. Declared figures, each with the method it was calculated by.
  • Who placed it on the market. The business responsible in the market it is sold in, with an address and a contact.

Tip. Two blocks you already have do passport work: Disposal covers what a person does with each part, and Origin covers where it came from. You do not need to repeat either.

Every figure carries its method

The Footprint block asks for a method beside each number, and that field is not decoration. A carbon figure with no standard behind it tells a reader nothing, and it is the first thing a retailer's sustainability questionnaire asks for. If you do not know the method, that is worth knowing before you publish the number.

A figure with its method

“Carbon footprint · 2.4 kg CO2e · ISO 14067, cradle to gate”

The reason to do this now

Not a statute. A purchase order. Retailers are asking for this data well ahead of any deadline, and the ones who ask tend to want it somewhere a buyer can open rather than in a spreadsheet attached to an email. A page on your own address, reachable from the code on the pack, answers that.
