Change where a printed code goes

2 minutes

This is the whole argument for a Digital Link over a printed web address. The square on the pack never changes. What it opens is yours to change for as long as the product exists.

Re-point one link

  1. 1
    Products, the product, Links

Open the link you want to move.

  2. 2
    Paste the new address

    Save.

  3. 3
    Scan it

The next scan goes to the new page. Nothing is cached, so there is no wait and nothing to clear.

What you can change, and what you cannot

  • Change freely: where any link points, which link is the default, the link types you hold, the hosted page's words and images, the product's name and brand.
  • Change with care: the domain. The printed code carries it, so moving to a new one leaves every printed pack pointing at the old address.
  • Cannot change: the GTIN and the address inside the printed square. Those are the pack.

A campaign that ends

A promotion link is the one most likely to go stale. Point it somewhere that still makes sense in a year, or delete it when the offer closes so the code falls back to the product page. A dead promotion is the most common way a good packaging code starts disappointing people.

Anything you add to the scanned address as a query parameter is passed through to the destination, so a campaign parameter survives the hop and shows up in your own analytics.
