X (Twitter) QR code: your profile from any camera

X's code, and the catch

X does have one built in. In the app, tap your profile icon in the top menu, then the QR code icon in the bottom right; the same screen scans other people's codes, and it can read a code from your photo library. X's help center notes that its scanner opens an account's profile for an X code and a website or app for any other code, and that only links beginning with http:// or https:// scan successfully.

The catch is in the same help article: change your username and the QR code changes completely, and the previous code is invalid. Changing your profile picture is harmless, since the picture is only decoration on the code, but a rename kills everything you printed. That is worth knowing before a few hundred business cards go to a printer, and it is the reason the code on print is better made from a link you control.

Where it earns follows

X is read on a phone, usually by someone who is already reading something else, so the code works best where a person is sitting still with a screen in front of them: the last slide of a talk, a conference badge, a booth banner, the footer of a printed report, the back of a business card. It also does well on a sticker, because laptop stickers are read by people who will look you up later.

Put the handle in readable type next to the code. Half the value of a printed handle is that it can be typed, remembered, or searched later when the phone is not in hand.

• Last slide of a talk: a quarter of the screen height, left up during questions.
• Conference badge: 1 in (2.5 cm), where people scan each other in a queue.
• Business card back: 0.9 in (2.2 cm), with the handle in text.
• Booth banner or poster: 3 in (8 cm) or more.
• Printed report or zine footer: 0.8-1 in (2-2.5 cm).

Profile, post or a list of everything

The generator builds the profile link from your handle, which is the right default. For a single post, copy its link from the share icon and make a plain link code; on Premium you can also point a dynamic code at a post for a launch and back at the profile afterwards. If what you actually want is one code for every platform at once, that is a link-in-bio page, not an X code.

Why make it dynamic

Handles change more often on X than anywhere else: a rebrand, a project name, a personal account that becomes a company one. X's own code is generated from your username and, in X's words, changing your username makes the previous code invalid. A dynamic code is a short link you own, so a rename is one edit in your dashboard and the conference badge, the slide deck and the printed cards all keep working. Every scan is counted too, so you learn which of them actually brought followers.
